Introduction
The Historic Vehicle Research Institute and the University of Brighton in the United Kingdom have come together with www.motorbase.com to build an international archive of our mobile heritage. This catalogued archive will digitally preserve images of our mobile heritage for everyone to enjoy and study.
Building and using the Archive
Who & What? Submissions to the archive are welcome from everyone. It doesn't matter how old you are or where you live. Submissions are welcome from amateurs and professionals from all nations. You can enter single photographs, portfolios or collections. Single submission can be made on the site. If you wish the team of the Photographic Archive of Transport Heritage (PATH) to upload multiple images for you just contact the PATH administrator.
We would prefer submissions to be accompanied by details in English but this is not essential. Where necessary we will work with experts to provide any translations that are required.
We are building an archive of images before they are lost for ever.
What does the archive contain?
You can upload images yourself from the site or send images in the post that are:
- Old photographs, transparencies, negatives or plates etc. that are scanned by you or by the PATH team,
- Modern images old forms of transport transport from our heritage,
- Modern images of modern forms of transport that you think will become part of our heritage in years to come.

We need your help Identifying & cataloguing
At the moment we have 20,487 images in the digital archive and we anticipate this number to rise as contributors send us their photographs. However, so far we have only managed to identify and catalogue 8326 of the initial 20,000.Photograph of the day

Nick Georgano, the retired Editor-in-chief, The Beaulieu Encyclopaedia of the Automobile (HMSO, 2000), is working with the team at the Photographic Archive of Transport Heritage (PATH) to load 16,000 plus of his image collection into the archive. The project is due to take several years and involve a lot of detailed work but Nick and everyone at PATH are convinced it will be a tremendously useful to anyone interested in historic vehicles.
